Maroon 5 Conversation: What does making a band and growing a company have in common?

To say that we were a little starstruck meeting the founding drummer of Maroon 5 is an understatement.

Ryan Dusick is the original drummer of Maroon 5 and his story is absolutely incredible. When he sat down on the Choose Africa podcast, we were beyond excited and grateful his time.

It’s not JUST because he started one of the biggest bands in the world. But it’s his story. His transformation. His generosity. His mission today that captivated us.

The Rise to Fame

After spending years building Maroon 5, the band had made it. They were at the height of success. But unfortunately for Ryan, dealing with health and addiction issues, he struggled to even be able to play the drum. The day came when he physically had to leave the band just as they were really taking off.

While initially angry, this led him to ultimately seek treatment, prioritize health, and focus on his mental health as well. Today, Ryan is a licensed therapist, an author, and an incredible podcast host who is changing lives, breaking the stigma about mental health, and helping others get curious about taking ownership of their life.

Starting a Band and Growing a Business: What do they have in common?

In our conversation with Ryan, he shared the behind-the-scenes of starting Maroon 5 and we couldn’t help but notice how it aligned with the story of our clients who are growing their businesses.

Here are the 5 lessons that stood out the most.

01 Persistance Pays Off

Maroon 5 is NOT a story of overnight success. It was years in the making. Not giving up is the reason they are here today.

02 Enjoy the Journey

Ryan shared the long road it took before they finally made it. This includes playing over 500 concerts almost back to back. The key to finally make it depends on enjoying the process along the way.

03 Be Excellent

It’s the pursuit of excellence over perfection that makes the difference. While seeming the same, striving to get better everyday is what makes the difference.

04 Embrace Failure

Maroon 5 started off as a different name– Kara’s Flowers. Unfortunately, it was hard for most people to understand or pronounce right. Their first album, despite well funded, failed. While growing his band, Ryan also had to work a regular job just to pay bills.

Our candid conversation with Ryan showed us how common failure is and how to keep going.

05 Wellbeing is Key

If you aren’t taking care of yourself physically or mentally–you will burn out, get sick, or be physically unable to continue. As a licensed therapist, Ryan shares his daily habits to keep him primed for a sustainable, balanced lifestyle that drives success.

In our episode, we are share funny stories, talk about his ‘Year of Yes,’ and the successful people he knew grewing up which showed him success was possible.

Ryan is by far one of the kindest, bravest, most generous people we have met. Watch the full episode on Youtube or wherever you get your podcasts. Don’t forget to also visit his website and grab his book or listen to his podcast too!
